Tate St Ives Adam Jones, Kemeneth

KEMENETH – the Cornish word for community – was an artist’s project developed by Adam James in collaboration with St Ives communities and Tate St Ives.
Adam James (b.1978) is a British artist whose work brings people together, often using ‘live action role play’ (larp). A group of local collaborators brought together by James met in a series of online sessions to playfully explore their experiences of the past two years during the pandemic.
The collaboration resulted in both an installation in the gallery and a free, immersive outdoor experience with digital sculptures appearing in the St Ives landscape using cutting-edge technology. Using a smartphone app, outdoor public spaces around St Ives were brought to life with immersive sculptures. Imagined characters, inspired costumes and banners were produced by James and the local community. These elements were also brought together in an immersive installation at Tate St Ives in 2021.
KEMENETH was realised with funds received by Tate St Ives as Art Fund Museum of the Year 2018.
